My brother often jokes that once I write something down, it’s done. “It’s even worse if she makes a binder,” he’ll quip to anyone listening. He’s right. I’m a goal oriented person. I thrive on a to do list. Simple wisdom about getting things done can be irritating. “Do it a little piece at a time.” “Make a plan.” “Hold yourself accountable.” “Set little goals.” It’s obnoxious. It’s cringe (Am I using that phrase right? Who knows).
Sadly, this advice exists becuase…it’s true. I love a good manifestation journal. I’m not sure if it’s the universe that makes things happen or if it’s the fact that the process keeps me focused. More gets done when I write down the goal I’m working on. When I say, “This is what I want, and I’m not going to be afraid of going after it anymore.” It also really helps when I can check something off - am I right? It’s that little hit of dopamine that keeps me coming back for more on my to-do list.
A goal may start big. I write down tons of things that are huge. My vision board includes a lake house, vacations with my family, owning a horse, getting my black belt, being a published author, and being an inspirational speaker. But you don’t start there. You start with baby steps.
My most recent goal was to send a book draft to an editor by the end of July. I started with 5-10 minutes that turned into 20 some days because I couldn’t stop my brain. It is a train that leaves the station at 90 mph and I pray that it doesn’t run into another training going the opposite direction at 80 mph and they collide in Denver. I got my draft to an editor before the end of July. Which meant I got it back the beginning of August, and could keep the momentum going. This accountability led me to a 5 am writers group (I have found 5 am is a wonderful time for a lot of things).
I write regularly. I am a writer. I have a voice. I have a new goal and I’m putting it on paper: I will publish a blog weekly. I will chronicle this journey to inspire and inform others. The good, the bad, and the ugly. I am writing it on paper and putting it out for the world to see.
Lesson for the week: Don’t be afraid to write down your goal. To say it out loud. It might just be the thing you need to take the first step towards achieving it!
In Laughter,
Megan
